The latest Nintendo Direct aired last September 12, 2025 and with it is a whole slew of game reveals for the Nintendo Switch 2. Here are the highlights for this Nintendo Direct.
40 years of “It’s a-me Mario!”
Since 1985, Mario has been a gaming icon and this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of the franchise. This Direct, Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto kicked off the presentation by announcing activities to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. First was revealing that the Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 games will launch on the Nintendo Switch system on October 2. Both games will be available for separate purchase on the eShop. In bigger news, Miyamoto also announced that the new animated film by Illumination will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Alongside it was a new teaser trailer with the returning cast from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Nintendo Switch 2 owners can also look forward to more action with Mario and friends in Mario Tennis Fever, a new serving in the sports series; an intriguing new tale to unravel in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book; and new multiplayer-focused additions to Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the 2D adventure’s new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
Virtual Boy is back in Red and Black
Of all things, the Virtual Boy has made a comeback on Nintendo Switch Online. Select games from Nintendo’s Virtual Boy, are coming to Nintendo Classics exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. To play, you’ll need Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers and the dedicated accessory based on the original Virtual Boy hardware – stereoscopic 3D included – when inserting the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch system. Dive into titles like Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, Teleroboxer and more as they release over time. Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics comes to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Feb. 17, 2026. The accessory needed to play Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, as well as a cardboard version, will be available to pre-purchase on the My Nintendo Store in the future.
The Virtual Boy was released back in 1995 and was an early experiment in VR and stereoscopic 3D. Unfortunately, the system became a commercial failure and is well known even by Nintendo. Now, on it’s 30th anniversary, the Virtual Boy is not only getting an online release, but also a new console? Color us surprised!
Metroid Prime 4 Gets a release date
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launches on Nintendo Switch systems on Dec. 4. After an unexpected accident, Samus finds herself transported to the mysterious planet Viewros. Using her newfound psychic abilities, and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La, to traverse and explore the environment, and use every tool at her disposal to survive and escape Viewros. Plus, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond amiibo figures are on the way! Samus (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond), Samus & Vi-O-La (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond) will be available on Nov 6, and enigmatic bounty hunter Sylux (Metroid Prime 4: Beyond) will launch the same day as the game on Dec. 4 (amiibo sold separately).
The latest entry in the Fire Emblem franchise is revealed.
Lastly, the final game revealed was the latest entry in the long-running Fire Emblem franchise. The Heroic Games have begun. The newest entry in the Fire Emblem series is set to enter the arena. The debut trailer provided a glimpse of the intertwining story of Cai, Theodora, Dietrich, and Leda, and the series’ signature turn-based tactical RPG gameplay. The game seems to be set in the same world of 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Although when in the timeline is yet to be seem. The game launches for Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
